How to Make an Outdoor Mason Jar Chandelier with a Succulent Garden

Now that the weather is warm, one of my favorite things to do is sit outside after dinner and relax while the kids play before they go to bed. Because of this we have made small improvements to our outdoor living space including this easy DIY chandelier that I made from a footed plant holder and Mason jars. This little chandelier adds life and charm and of course, a little light.

Directions

Bending and Preparing the Container

One of the great uses of a torch is for softening metal to bend or cut it. For the planter I found, I wanted to change the position of the feet for the purpose of this chandelier and placement of the hanging jars. The Bernzomatic ST2200 was perfect for this.

First, fill the ST2200 with butane. Ignite the flame and heat a foot for a few seconds. I waited about ten seconds and then wearing gloves, changed the position of the foot. Repeat this for all four feet.

Next, drill three holes on the sides for the planter. Insert twine (or a chain) to hang the chandelier.

How to Make Hanging Mason Jars

First, remove the lids and lid inserts of the Mason jars. Using a hole punch or drill, punch a hole on two sides of the lid. Next, thread wire through the bottom. Lastly, twist the wire on each side to secure it. Cut off any excess wire. Screw the lid back onto the Mason jar without the lid insert.

Planting the Succulents

For proper drainage, I used a layer of small pebbles at the bottom of the pan. This way, you do not have to drill holes at the bottom of the pan resulting in water dripping over the Mason jars.

Next, place a layer of soil and then plant your succulents and arrange the garden. I opted to plant succulent clipping from my backyard.  I have had a lot of success with growing succulent clippings. Water the garden.

Hang the succulent garden first in the desired area on your patio. Then, hang each jar on each foot and place a tealight inside. Enjoy!
